About Øvre Dividal National Park
Øvre Dividal National Park is one of Northern Norway’s largest protected wilderness areas and a place where nature still dominates the landscape. Established in 1971 to preserve a largely untouched mountain and valley ecosystem, the park covers approximately 750 square kilometres of forests, rivers, wetlands, and alpine terrain.
The landscape is remarkably diverse. Ancient pine forests and mountain birch woodlands cover the valley floors, while higher elevations open into vast alpine plateaus and rugged mountain terrain. Rivers, marshes, and lakes create important habitats for a wide range of Arctic plants and animals.
The park is known as one of the most important wilderness areas in Northern Norway and provides habitat for some of Scandinavia’s most iconic wildlife. Moose are common in the valleys, while wolverine, lynx, and bear also live within the national park. Birdlife is rich, and reindeer have moved through these landscapes for generations. Wildlife sightings are always possible but never guaranteed.
For centuries, the area has also been an important cultural landscape. The valleys and mountains have been used by Sámi communities, settlers, hunters, and travellers who depended on the resources of the wilderness. Today, the national park protects both natural and cultural heritage while offering visitors the opportunity to experience silence, solitude, and some of the most pristine landscapes in Arctic Norway.
Unlike many popular destinations in Northern Norway, Øvre Dividal remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Visitors come here not for crowds or attractions, but for authentic wilderness experiences, wide open landscapes, and a deeper connection with nature.
