At Up in the Arctic, all winter experiences are private and small-scale. The focus is not mass tourism, but meaningful encounters with Arctic nature, local culture, and the rhythm of winter life in Northern Norway.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to visit Northern Norway in winter?

The winter season in the Bardufoss and Målselv region usually begins in mid-November and lasts until early April. Different periods offer different experiences.

November and December often bring fresh snow, dark days, and great Northern Lights opportunities. January and February usually provide colder temperatures, more stable winter weather, and excellent conditions for snowshoe hiking and wildlife experiences. March and April has longer days and milder days, and still have lots of snow.

Can we see moose in winter?

The Bardufoss and Målselv region is known for having a large moose population, and winter is often a good time to search for tracks and observe moose in snowy landscapes.

However, moose are wild animals living freely in nature, so sightings can never be guaranteed. The experience focuses on respectful wildlife observation and understanding the Arctic environment — not chasing animals.

This aligns with the philosophy behind the Wild Moose Safari experiences.

Are northern lights guaranteed?

No. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed.

The Bardufoss region is located beneath the Aurora Oval and often offers stable inland winter weather with low light pollution, which can create very good viewing conditions during clear nights.

Are all tours private?

Yes. All winter experiences are private tours.

Only one booking is accepted per departure, allowing for a slower pace, personal guiding, and flexibility adapted to the group. This is part of Up in the Arctic’s small-scale and low-impact tourism philosophy.

Are the experiences suitable for beginners?

Most winter experiences are suitable for guests with normal physical condition and little or no previous winter experience.

Some tours include walking in snow-covered terrain, uneven forest trails, or short snowshoe hikes. The pace is normally adapted to the participants. Each experience page includes detailed information about difficulty level and terrain.

What should we wear during winter?

Guests should wear warm layered clothing suitable for Arctic winter conditions.

We recommend:

  • wool base layers
  • insulated flat winter boots or hiking boots
  • windproof outerwear
  • warm hat and mittens
  • wool socks

Proper winter footwear is important for both comfort and safety.

How cold does it get in Bardufoss during winter?

Winter temperatures in the Bardufoss region commonly range between -5°C and -20°C, although colder periods may occur. Shorter periodes with positive degrees and rain or sleet are also experienced every winter.

The inland climate is often drier and more stable than coastal areas, which many guests find more comfortable for winter activities.

Do we need previous snowshoeing experience?

No previous snowshoeing experience is required.

Snowshoeing is relatively easy to learn, and the guide provides instructions before the hike begins. The tours are designed for normal active travelers rather than experienced mountaineers.

Is pickup included?

Some experiences offer pickup from selected nearby accommodations, while others start from meeting points such as Høgtun Kulturklynge or Målselv Mountain Village.

Certain experiences from Tromsø and Narvik also involve public bus transportation. Full meeting and transportation details are available on each experience page.

Are the experiences family friendly?

Many experiences are suitable for families with children above approximately 10 years old.

The suitability depends on weather, fitness level, and the specific experience. Families are welcome to contact Up in the Arctic before booking to find the most suitable tour.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Winter weather in Northern Norway can change quickly. Experiences normally operate in typical Arctic winter conditions, including snow and cold temperatures.

In rare cases where conditions are considered unsafe, the experience may be adjusted, rescheduled, or cancelled. Safety always has priority.

Why choose Bardufoss instead of Tromsø for winter experiences?

The Bardufoss and Målselv region offers a quieter and less crowded Arctic experience with easy access to forests, wildlife habitats, mountain landscapes, and dark winter skies.

The inland climate often creates stable winter conditions that are well suited for snowshoe hiking, wildlife safaris, and Northern Lights experiences. Many guests choose the region for its calm atmosphere and authentic connection to Arctic nature.
